Aligning with circular economy principles, and to support our customers' ambitious sustainability goals, CAW has established a strong reputation for maximising renewable energy generation from wastewater.

This achievement is driven by our expertise in both design and engineering solutions as well as our operational excellence.

ISO50001 Energy Management System

Our energy management systems incorporate industry best practices, including Total Quality Management (TQM) and Lean principles. CAW has developed a robust system aimed at enhancing energy performance, focusing on both energy efficiency and consumption across our operations.

This approach enables us to identify and eliminate inefficiencies, using Energy Performance Indicators (EnPIs) to ensure the optimal use of electricity and gas, delivering a cost-effective service that maximises value for our customers.

How CAW Adds Value

CAW works closely in partnership with clients to achieve carbon reduction objectives through a comprehensive approach, focused on:

Biogas Production through Anaerobic Digestion

Anaerobic Digestion is a highly specialised process that can generate substantial amounts of energy safely when managed effectively. At Ringsend WwTW, over 65 million kWh of renewable energy is produced from biogas to power operations, a figure we continuously optimise and strive to increase through proactive maintenance and upgrades.

Combined Heat and Power Systems

We specialise in integrating Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems to enhance energy efficiency. Our solutions provide reliable, on-site electrical power generation plus the recovery of surplus heat for improved operational sustainability and cost savings.

Optimising Energy Output

Our approach to increasing and optimising energy output focuses on advanced monitoring and control systems alongside proactive maintenance. We use Energy Performance Indicators (EnPIs) to implement strategies and upgrades that enhance performance, reduce energy consumption, and ensure that energy systems operate at peak efficiency.

New Technology Solutions

We are at the forefront of adopting and integrating new technology solutions to drive innovation in renewable energy production. Recent projects focus on proposing solutions to recover low-value heat from engine cooling systems for site-wide hot water and capture excess engine heat to potentially provide district heating for future housing developments in the Ringsend neighbourhood.

Maximising Long-term Asset Value

Minimising the carbon impact of our operations is crucial, and relies on maximising long-term asset value through proactive maintenance and continuous process optimisation. We focus on extending asset life, improving performance and ensuring that investments provide lasting benefits and cost efficiency.

Energy production across CAW sites

CAW understands the sustainability and financial drivers of our customers. Using our extensive expertise in energy generation, we have invested resources to design, build, operate, and maintain the most advanced and innovative energy management systems.

Our managed plants produce approximately 12 million cubic meters of energy-rich biogas annually, with the potential to generate around 72 Million kWh of energy to power steam generators and fuel steam CHP units across our plants. Excess hot water and steam from boilers and steam generators are used for processes such as sludge pasteurisation and thermal hydrolysis.

A Commitment to Innovation

CAW participates in and leverages extensive research and development by actively partnering with our sister company, Anglian Water Services, in shaping the future of energy management. Ongoing projects within the group in wind, solar, and battery storage systems widen our expertise in renewable energy management.

This wealth of knowledge, gained from Anglian Water as one of the largest energy users in the UK, allows us to share valuable insights and benefits with our clients.

CAW Managed Sites

Ringsend Wastewater Treatment Works serves 50% of the Republic of Ireland's population and is one of the largest and most advanced treatment works in Europe. CAW has operated and maintained the plant for Uisce Éireann since 1999.
Managed by CAW on behalf of Uisce Éireann since 2010, Waterford Wastewater Treatment Works serves 190,000 people, using advanced processes to meet the highest standard to the environment and improve biodiversity.
Since 2009, CAW has operated and maintained the site (located in a Special Area of Conservation) on behalf of Uisce Éireann - consistently delivering high standards that prioritise biodiversity and environmental protection.
Since 2001 CAW have managed the operation and maintenance of the state-of-the-art Foxes Den water treatment plant to deliver around 16.5 million litres of drinking water per day to the county's population and businesses.
